The Distribution of Burst Energy and Shock Parameters for Gamma-ray Bursts
نویسنده
چکیده
We calculate the statistical distribution of observed afterglow flux, in some fixed observed frequency band, and at some fixed observer time after the explosion (tobs) in two models – one where the explosion takes place in a uniform density medium and the other where the surrounding medium has a power-law stratification such as is expected for a stellar wind. For photon energies greater than about 500 electron-volt and tobs ∼> 10 3 sec the afterglow flux distribution functions for the uniform ISM and the wind models are nearly identical. We compare the width of the theoretical distribution with the observed x-ray afterglow flux and find that the FWHM of the distribution for energy in explosion and the fractional energy in electrons (ǫe) are each less than about one order of magnitude and the FWHM for the electron energy index is 0.6 or less. A New Approach to Statistics of Cosmological Gamma-ray Bursts
We use a new method of analysis to determine parameters of cosmological gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), assuming that their distribution follows the star formation history of the universe. Spectral evolution is calculated from an external shock model for Ðreball/blast-wave evolution and used to evaluate the measured peak Ñux, duration, and peak photon energy for a GRB source occurring at a given redsh...
متن کاملThe Role of the BATSE Instrument Response in Creating the GRB E-Peak Distribution
All gamma-ray bursts are observed to have approximately the same characteristic gamma-ray energy. We show in this article that for bursts in the BATSE data set, this property as measured by the E-peak value is not an instrumental effect, but a physical property of gamma-ray bursts. 1. The Characteristic Photon Energy of Bursts The prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts is observed predominately at...
متن کاملGamma-ray and Early Afterglow Emission in the External Shock Model
We describe our attempt to determine if gamma-ray burst (GRB) and afterglow emissions could both arise in external shocks for simple GRBs – bursts consisting of just a few peaks in their lightcurves. We calculate peak flux and peak frequency during the gamma-ray burst for ten well observed bursts using the same set of parameters that are determined from modeling afterglow emissions. We find the...

متن کاملOn the Gamma Ray Burst Origin of Extremely Energetic Cosmic Rays
Air shower experiments have detected cosmic ray events of energies upto 300 EeV. Most likely these cosmic rays have originated from compact objects. Their exact sources are yet to be identified. It has been suggested before that gamma ray bursts are possible sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The two models of gamma ray burst emissions most often discussed are the internal and external s...
متن کاملThe Energy Distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts
The distribution of the apparent total energy emitted by a gamma-ray burst reflects not only the distribution of the energy actually released by the burst engine, but also the distribution of beaming angles. Using the observed energy fluences, the detection thresholds and burst redshifts for three burst samples, I calculate the best-fit parameters for lognormal and power-law distributions of th...
